Supplementary Pay Reference Periods & Pay Dates Overview

PAE legislation requires that employers know the "relevant" pay reference period for each of their employees. Since the introduction of PAE duties it has become necessary for all employers to think very carefully about the terms and conditions under which their employees are paid.

Q1: Are your pay reference periods out of step with your payroll periods?

Q2: Do you move your pay dates due to them falling on non-working days (i.e. weekends and Public Holidays?)

Unusual Pay Reference Periods

If an employer collates hours worked on a four-weekly basis and pays the worker's wage in respect of those hours worked, their pay reference period will be four-weekly - even if the employer is using a monthly payroll to pay those employees.

Example

An employee is contractually paid in a 13 week cycle; 4 weeks/4 weeks /5 weeks. However due to payroll limitations this has been implemented under a monthly payroll frequency. In this case, the pay reference periods are not based on the monthly pay period start and end dates. Instead they are based on the period start and end dates of the 4 weeks, 4 weeks and 5 weeks.

In which case, you need to let the PAE solution know that the payroll period dates should not be used as the pay reference periods for that employee.
