A variable is a placeholder for data that can be changed when you execute a report. For example, a variable might be a global company or a fiscal year. Variables are not only used in reporting, but also in planning and for summarizing data using rollups.

There are three types of variables:

  1. Enter a variable name, the table, and the name of the field (dimension) which the variable is to use.
  2. Select a variable type.
  3. Enter a value, a formula or a set ID depending on the variable type.

You transport variables into the productive system using a specific Customizing transaction. For more information, see the "Transport Sets/Variables" step.

For more information on creating and maintaining variables, see Financial Accounting -> Special Purpose Ledger -> Sets -> Variables in the SAP Library.
