A project coding mask is used to create a structure for the project IDs. A coding mask helps in displaying complex projectIDs. For example, it can help in indicating the level of the WBS element in the overall project hierarchy.

This app is used to create or edit the coding mask that determines the structure of project element IDs. Based on the first character (which is the coding key) that you input in the Project Control app for instance, the project ID takes the structure of the coding mask defined for the corresponding coding key. If no key exists for the first character, no coding mask is applied for the project element ID.

In addition, if you lock a coding mask, it means you cannot use the mask and its corresponding coding key to create the project element IDs.

Note:

  • The coding keys defined in this app prohibits you from creating any project names starting with this character in apps such as Create Customer Projects and Create Internal Projects.
  • If a project exists in production system, coding mask with same key as the project cannot be transported from quality system to the production system.
  • If there is a project with a coding key in the quality system, you can transport the coding mask with the same key to the production system.
  • Create a coding mask:
Field Description
Coding Key The coding key must have a length of a single character. The first character following the coding key must be a separator.
Coding Mask The coding mask can consist of numeric characters (represented by ‘0’), alphanumeric characters (represented by ‘X’), and separators. A separator is used to separate the coding mask from the coding key and also the different se , ;, -, <, =.
Description Corresponds to the description of the project coding mask. You can carry out a search function on the description of the mask.
Locked If you lock the coding mask, this means that the coding mask and its corresponding coding key cannot be used in the creation of new project element IDs.

  • Edit an existing coding mask:
When you edit an existing coding mask, only the following changes are permissible:
  • Introduce a new section to the existing mask containing either X or 0 characters.

  • Modify an existing section only by changing 0 to X characters.

  • Modify the existing separator to one that belongs to the permissible list of separators.

Locked

Consider the following values for the creation of a project coding mask:

Coding Key: T

Coding Mask: /000-XXX-000/XXXX

Based on the project definition you input in the Project Control app for instance, the project ID takes the following structure:
