In this activity, you define shipment cost information profiles for calculating shipment costs in sales documents. Often, it is important to know at least the estimated value of shipment costs - especially when the shipment costs make up a considerable amount of the total cost. Since no deliveries, shipments or shipment cost documents normally exist at this point, simulated versions of each are "created" in the background in order to calculate the shipment costs.

You can assign one or more transportation planning profiles to a shipment cost information profile. These planning profiles are used to create shipments in collective processing for storing certain selection variables and data that are used repeatedly. A planning profile defines how deliveries should be put together in shipments and which data should be used to complete shipment documents. You can assign various planning profiles to a shipment cost information profile, in order to compare the costs of shipment by train with shipment by truck, for example. You can also assign a planning profile for creating transportation chains.

If you only want an estimated value rather than a comparison and therefore do not assign a planning profile to the shipment cost information profile, then the shipment cost information profile details (transportation planning point, shipment type, pricing procedure) and order data (forwarding agent, route) are used to calculate shipment costs and to create the related simulated shipment.

A sales document type is assigned to the shipment costs profile (see also Define sales document types in sales Customizing).

If you now start the calculation of shipment costs in the sales document by choosing Extras -> Shipment cost information, data from the order and from the shipment costs information profile allocated to the corresponding sales document type is used to create the simulated shipments. If there are planning profiles assigned to the shipment costs type, that data is also used for parallel shipment costs calculation so that you can compare the various shipment options.

To create and assign a new shipment cost information profile, proceed as follows:

  1. Choose New entries and enter a shipment costs profile and a description.
  2. Assign a transportation planning point, shipment type and pricing procedure to the shipment for calculation purposes.
  3. If necessary, assign one or more planning profiles so that the shipments can be created. You may choose from planning profiles that already exist in the system, or you may create new ones by entering a description and choosing Maintain.
  4. Assign the shipment cost information profile to the sales document type of your choice in the activity about defining sales document types in sales Customizing.
