Define delivery item categories.

You can define various attributes of delivery item categories to control their usage within delivery documents to match your requirements.

In this menu option you define your item categories for deliveries. In connection with the delivery types, they represent the different business transactions in the SAP System.

The item categories, together with the delivery types contained in the standard SAP System, cover the usual business transactions.

You have the following possibilities for defining your own item categories:

  • Change an existing item category.
  • Copy an existing item category and change it according to your requirements.
  • Create a new item category.

In this menu option you do not make specifications concerning the following functions:

  • Picking
  • Statistics
  • Text determination

You will edit these functions later in the respective menu options.

This means that the definition of a delivery item category is only complete if you have edited all of these menu options.

In this menu option you have to make or check the following specifications:

  • Item category
  • Specify an alphanumeric key with up to 4 characters for the item category.

  • Enter text to describe the key.

  • Material 0
Here you define that it is not necessary to specify a material number for the item category. For example, you do not have to specify a material number for text items.

You can maintain the following settings for each item category:

  • Material-related settings
For material in a delivery item, you can define the following settings:
  • Stock Determination Rule: You can assign a stock determination rule to a delivery item category to influence stock determination during goods issue posting.

  • Quantity settings
For the quantity settings in a delivery item, you can define the following:
  • Quantity 0: For items with delivery quantity 0, you can define different system responses, for example, you can have the system display an error message.

  • Minimum Quantity: If you have defined a minimum quantity in the material master record or in a customer-material info record, the system can check if the delivery quantity of an item is below this threshold. With this setting, you can determine the system response to such a situation, for example, you can have the system display an error message.

  • Overdelivery: The system can check whether the original order quantity has been exceeded. Here you define how the system responds if the original order quantity has been exceeded.

  • Transaction procedure
You can determine the transaction procedure for an item category individually:
  • Group screen sequence

Here you determine the screens which are to be displayed for a certain transaction (for example, creating a delivery) and the sequence in which they are displayed.
  • Field selection item

Here you determine the fields, depending on the item category, which are to be displayed by the SAP System on the item screens.
You can display a list of the keys you may use under "Possible entries". Currently, you cannot change the keys in Customizing.
  • Picking-related settings
You can define the following settings related to picking/putaway for delivery item categories:
  • Relevant for Picking

You can determine if an item with a specific delivery item category is relevant for picking or putaway.
  • Storage Location Required

You can decide if a storage location must be entered to complete processing of an item with a specific delivery item category.
  • Determine Storage Location

You can specify here if the system should automatically determine a storage location for picking/putaway for an item.
  • Do Not Check Storage Location

You can specify here that the system should skip the standard check if batch master data exist for the batch which was entered for a specific delivery item.

You can also view the following settings for each item category:

  • Material-related settings
  • Material Quantity 0: You can view if delivery items with a specific category may be entered without a material number, for example for text items.

  • Warehouse Control and Packing
  • Automatic Batch Determination: You can display the automatic determination of batches for items of the specific item category. Activate the automatic batch determination using the configuration activity Activate Automatic Batch Determination for Sales Order ItemCategory.

  • Transaction Flow
  • Text Determination Procedure: You can view which text determination procedure is assigned to a delivery item category.

  • Text Type for Text Transfer to Material Document
  • You can view which text type in which language is used for transferring texts to the material documents of a specific item category.

If you create or copy new item categories for deliveries, you have to compare them with the item categories for sales documents. The SAP System copies the item category of an order item into the delivery. Therefore, you must have defined an item category with the same name for the delivery.

  • If you define your own item categories, the keys should start with the letter Z since SAP reserves this name convention in the standard system.
  • If you define your own item categories, you should copy similar item categories defined by SAP and make the corresponding changes.
In this case, all specifications of the already existing item category are copied as well as the allocation to the delivery types. In particular, data, for example, concerning text determination or document flow, which you do not edit in this menu option, is copied. This way, you can test your new item categories with regard to defaults set here without having to edit the other menu options.
  • When copying sales document types, item categories, and schedule line categories, the SAP System automatically creates a log with the copied data. Using the log, you can check whether all copied data applies to your item category or whether you have to make changes.
  • If you only have to make insignificant changes to the existing item categories, do so as appropriate.
An insignificant change may be a changed description. Insignificant changes refer to parameters that are not used for controlling purposes.
  • If you have to make further changes, define new item categories.
