This section contains configuration options related to structured materials.

The activities listed can influence the master data maintenance of component lists and influence how the system responds in the logistical process.

The activities mainly originate from Sales and from Production. The settings in the standard system should not normally be changed. Particularly in Production (Customizing for BOMs), there are numerous configuration options that cannot and must not be used for structured materials because the component lists are not real bills of material (BOMs). For this reason, you should carry out these activities only if there are problems, and carry out these activities only in the way described, and make changes with extreme caution.

The explosion of structured materials and empties BOMs in sales orders is controlled by item categories. The item category is proposed on the basis of the item category group for the material (-> Assign Item Categories). By configuring the item category (-> Define Item Categories), you can define whether an explosion takes place (structural scope and also the relevant application). A priority sequence is assigned to the application in Customizing for BOMs (-> Define Applications). This priority sequence (-> Define Priority Sequence for BOM Usage) must contain the BOM usages for Retail (-> Structured Material Maintenance).

Stock postings for empties are only made if you have carried out the activity Activate Empties Processing.

If, when creating component lists for structured materials or when creating empties BOMs, you encounter problems caused by incorrect Customizing, you can check the following activities:

  • Define BOM Usage
For BOM usages in Retail, processing in Sales must be allowed because component lists cannot otherwise be created for structured materials.
  • Define Allowed Material Types for BOM Header / for BOM Items
Here, you can disallow or allow specific material types. All material types are allowed in the standard system.

In addition, the following problems can be caused by incorrect Customizing:

  • Despite a material meeting all the requirements (material type, material category) for being the header or component of a structured material, it cannot be included in a BOM.
The material may have been assigned a material status that excludes it. In Define Material Statuses, check the fields Usage in BOM header and Usage in BOM item.
  • Component lists of structured materials cannot be distributed by ALE.
A distribution lock (that you can remove) may have been set in Define BOM Statuses. In Define Default Values, you define the default BOM statuses that BOMs have.

In Structured Material Maintenance, you define which item categories are received by the components of structured materials or the components of an empties BOM. In Define Item Categories, ensure that material entry is allowed and that the +/- sign for component quantity may be positive.

If you also want to use units of measure other than the base unit of measure in empties BOMs, you must create a separate dimension containing the required units as units of measurement. You do this in Check Units of Measurement. The dimension and also the units of measurement that you assign to it must not already exist in the system.
