In this section, you convert long names (supported as of Release 4.0) to short names (and vice versa) for message types and IDoc types, as well for segments. In addition, you assign unique names to combinations of extensions and basic types.

These actions can be necessary if you communicate with SAP systems of older releases or use an EDI subsystem that still has the status of an older SAP release.

If you only use IDoc types from older releases for this communication, you do not have to convert anything.

On the other hand, you must transcode in the following cases:

  • For 4.0 you use new IDoc types, messages or segments in IDoc types that have long names. Older releases only support mames with lengths of up to
  • 6 characters (message type), or

  • 8 characters (IDoc type), or

  • 7 characters (segment type)

  • You have extended basic types in 4.0. Older releases still identify these extended IDoc types via a separate name, while as of Release 4.0 identification is only via basic type and assigned extension.

You define the transcoding separately for

  • Basic type
  • Extension
  • Message type
  • Segments
  • Assignment Basic type+Extension -> IDoc type.

The following table shows the problem areas in communication with an older release (or EDI subsystem) and what action to choose.

Problem Action required
Long names Maintenance of appropriate tables
New extensions for 4.0 Assign extension+basic type to IDoc type
Both long names and First transcode to short names
extensions (maintenance of appropriate tables)
then assign extension+basic type to IDoc
type.

Only carry out the actions in this section that are specified for the respective problem in the above table. Therefore, ignore the note "Carry out the actions in the specified sequence" that appears when executing this Customizing transaction.
