You decide for each storage type whether or not it should have storage unit management.
If you decide to manage storage units in a storage type, all material movements in this storage type are regarded as movements of storage units. Storage unit numbers are assigned, if these do not yet exist.

Only define physical warehouses as storage types for storage unit management. You cannot define storage unit management for interim storage types (in the standard delivered version, these storage types have a number that is larger than 900). These are generally storage types used for communication with Inventory Management (IM) and Sales and Distribution (SD).

If you have defined storage unit management for a particular storage type, you can set further parameters, in addition to the existing parameters of the "standard" Warehouse Management System. These additional parameters influence the way the system functions in the following areas:

  • Mixed storage:
Using the mixed storage function, you can decide which storage unit types you want to allow in a storage type.
  • Identification point (ID point)
With some storage types (for example, automatic high rack storage area), the warehouse activities are designed so that storage units are not directly placed into stock into their final storage bin, but are first taken to an identification point near or in front of the respective storage type. Here the storage units are identified, briefly checked, and then taken from there to their final destination bin.
This type of identification point is represented in the WM system as a separate storage type. The identification point is defined in two steps:
  • You create the identification point storage type. For this storage type, select the stock placement strategy "Quant number" (Q) and mark the storage type as an ID point.

  • In the data of the storage type to which the identification point is physically assigned, assign the identification point as an ID point storage type.

Stock transfers to the "actual" storage type are now carried out in two steps: First, a transfer order for the ID point is created. Incoming storage units are received at the ID point, and transfer orders that transfer the storage units into the warehouse are created.
  • Complete stock removal:
Complete stock removal in storage types with storage unit management does not refer to the quant, but to the storage unit.
For all storage types with storage unit management, you also need to assign a pick point.
  • Pick point
Like the identification point, the pick point is a separate storage type. The storage type data (strategies, and so on) as well as the assignment of the pick point to the "actual" storage type are defined in the same way as for the identification point.
The pick point is used when a storage unit whose contents are not required in full for a transfer order is removed from stock from the "actual" storage type (with the definition for complete stock removal of storage units). The remaining quantity on the storage unit is posted to the pick point after confirmation of the transfer order and can be transferred from there as required (for example, it can be transferred to a storage area/type for partial quantities or it can be returned to the "actual" storage type).
If you are using this type of pick point in your system, you should decide whether you want to create your own transaction to cater to your special pick-point requirements. Standard processing at the pick point is as follows: an incoming storage unit is first confirmed via its number and the part that is to remain in the warehouse is then transferred using the transactions for storage unit movements. You can, if you wish, link these two standard transactions in order to simplify pick point procedures.
Complete your storage types with the storage unit parameters.
