Breaks are time during the day when an employee has a period of rest. In this activity you define break types that will be used by your organization. A break can be paid or unpaid. In most organizations, meals are considered to be unpaid breaks.

You use the break types defined in this activity within break rules. Define as many break types as will be used in break rule sets.

Break rules ensure the scheduled shifts include the meals and breaks set by company policy. Additionally, schedule rules call for a certain number of breaks and meals for shifts, depending on the scheduled shift length. The system uses break rules to decide if the appropriate types and numbers of breaks are assigned to each shift.

When generating a schedule, the system does not deduct the time of a paid break from calculated pay and shift hours. However, it does deduct the time for unpaid breaks from calculated pay and shift hours.

Common break types include:

  • Meals -- Typically unpaid time periods of 30 minutes or longer
  • Breaks -- Typically paid periods of approximately 15 minutes

Defining a break type includes defining the duration of paid and unpaid breaks, and defining whether particular breaks constitute a meal.

  1. Choose New Entries to define a break type definition profile, or select an existing profile to maintain its values.
  2. For new enrties, enter the Break Type.
  3. Enter the maximum allowable length of the break, in minutes. Set the time in quarter-hour increments, entered as 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120 minutes.
  4. Select the Paidindicator when this is a paid break and the break time should be included in schedule rules and schedule cost estimation calculations.
  5. Select the Mealindicator when this is a meal break.
  6. Enter the short description the system uses for display purposes.
  7. Optionally, enter a long description.
  8. Save your entries.
