Under this node, you maintain all Dispatcher-related customizing activities. But what is a Dispatcher?

Workforce Deployment (WFD) is a two-step process, the first of which is to create the best match between:

  • A technician and a given repair job
  • A consultant and a project to be staffed

The second step is to create an assignment for the technician / consultant.

The Dispatcher must perform some technical tasks to support this process, including ensuring data consistency between the WFD application, WFD Server, and the scheduling engine. In addition, the Dispatcher is also responsible for:

  • Supporting the manual assignment (dispatching) of jobs to technicians. For example, this process could require finding and ranking technicians to demands, or vice versa.
  • Automatically scheduling technicians to jobs, as required by various scheduling strategies
  • Performing utilization calculations for the resources

The WFD Server supports two Dispatchers: the Built-In Dispatcherand the liveCache Dispatcher.

The Built-In Dispatcher:

  • Offers planning capability for working time based resources only.
  • Implements a simple scheduling algorithm for demands without resource balancing. The scheduling algorithm finds free slots of resources in the forward direction.
  • Bases utilization calculation on "fixed" assignments only.
  • Requires no additional hardware.

The liveCache Dispatcher:

  • Offers an additional planning capability for external resources with capacitive availability input (not just based on working time, as for an employee). For example, you could define a contract with an external service provider, where 300 hours in September must be supplied during working times Monday - Friday between 8am and 8pm.
  • Has more automatic scheduling strategy parameters, such as backward, append, and ignore resource availability. (For more details, see the customizing activity liveCache Scheduling Strategy.)
  • Considers capacitive assignments during scheduling.
  • Uses a highly sophisticated utilization calculation algorithm, which considers the interdependencies between a resource's concrete and capacitive assignments.
  • Requires a liveCache installation, with additional hardware.
