If you want to delete logs from the database due to insufficient storage space and runtime problems but still want to keep the data, you can archive the logs. A log can only be archived if it has either expired (expiration data has been reached or exceeded) or if the log permits deletion before the expiration date.

Logs are archived using archiving object BC_SBAL.

The log header data, as well as the message data itself, is stored.

The application log provides an INDX-type table that can be used with the ABAP commands EXPORT TO DATASBASE and IMPORT TO DATABASE to store complex information.

Different methods for collecting messages

Note that customer-specific data from application logs written to the file BAL_INDX is archived but cannot be output with SAP method when displaying from the archive because the structures of the stored objects are not known.

The archiving programs, SBAL_ARCHIVE and SBAL_ARCHIVE_DELETE, are integrated and documented in the ADK - Archive Development Kit. Archive administration can be started with transaction SARA.
